International Institute of Information Technology

1.About University

Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs) are the Institutes of National Importance (INI) established to focus on Information Technology& Communication Studies. These are a group of Higher Education Institutes established by Ministry of Human Resources Development under Department of Higher Education.Demand for IT products and services has grown rapidly over the past few years. To address the challenges faced by the Indian IT industry and growth of the domestic IT market, the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Government of India has set up Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIIT).These IIITs are best after IITs & NITs in the country. Around 23 IIIT s are established in India out which 5 are established & funded by MHRD while rest of 18 are established under Public Private Partnership (PPPs).

The IIITs established before 2010, Gwalior, Allahabad, Jabalpur & Kanchipuram were not established under any Act. In 2010 a bill was put in Parliament of India for the status of Institutes of National Importance for these 4 institutes which got approved in January 2015 & an act named Indian Institutes of Information Technology Act of 2014 was passed in 2010, the Union Cabinet approved a scheme for the setup of 20 more IIITs, based on the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) Model. The PPP model is a financial investment model which involves gathering funds by the Central Government, State Government & Industry Partners in the ratio of 50:35:15. The main objective of establishing IIITs is to set up a model of education which can produce best-in-class human resource in IT and harness the multi-dimensional facets of IT in various domains, such as design, manufacturing, and management.

These institutes:

  • Are autonomous, research-led education institutions.
  • Are set up by an Act of Parliament
  • Are set up to contribute significantly to the global competitiveness of key sectors of the Indian economy and industry.
  • Are focused on applied research and education in IT in selected domain areas and other emerging disciplines.

3.Conception of IIITs

The Government of India recognizing the growing needs of the IT industry in the country, set up a committee under the leadership of Dr. P. G. Reddy to study the comprehensive state of software education and its utilization in India. This committee clearly identified a need to set up dedicated institutions to address the growing demand for skilled information technology engineers. Between 1997 and 2015, the Government of India has established 5 centrally funded institutions focused on imparting education in the field of Information Technology and its derivatives. Responding to the permeation of IT in every aspect of Industrial growth, 2 of these institutions are additionally mandated with the task of imparting knowledge in IT-driven design and manufacturing. With India rapidly embracing IT even in legacy domains and the government fostering IT innovations by way of programs such as Digital India etc., the role of IIITs is more important than ever.
