Central University

1.About University

Central Universities in India are established under the guidance of the Department of Higher Education which is in Union Human Resource Development Ministry & an Act of Parliament.  These are covered by the Central Universities Act, 2009 that regulates their purpose, powers, governance, etc. About 18 Central Universities are established in almost 13 states of the country. These central universities are established as part of Higher Education development by Minister Human Resources Department (MHRD). These Universities get their funds from the University Grants Commission of India (UGC). The 18 Central Universities in India include 14 central Universities & 4 State Universities.

These central Universities offer various Undergraduate, Postgraduate, Integrated Masters & Research programs for students all around the country. The common entrance exam that these universities use for admission of students to the Undergraduate program is CUCET. This exam is usually conducted by the Central University of Rajasthan every year.

1. Assam Central University:

Assam University came into existence in 1994 under the Central University Act of 1989. Assam University‘s main campus is situated at Dargakona about 20 km away from Silchar. The campus is spread over 600 acres & provides an ideal environment for researchers, students. It has its other campus at Diphu in Karbi Anglong District.

The University has around 16 schools for various subjects like Humanities, Languages, Environmental Sciences, Information Sciences, Life Sciences, Physical Sciences, Social Sciences, Law, Technology, and Management Studies. With 42 departments in these 16 schools, the university is an institutional signatory to the Global Universities Network for Innovation. Assam University has 5 districts under its Jurisdiction with 56 Undergraduate colleges. The University has Chancellor – Guljar & Vice-Chancellor – Dilip Chandra Nath who are striving to get the status of the Institute of Excellence for the university. The University attained NIRF (overall) – 101- 150 & NIRF (Universities) – 87 Ranks respectively.

2. Baba Ghulam Shah Badshah University (GSBU):

Baba Ghulam Shah Badshah University is established with the Act of the Jammu & Kashmir Legislative Assembly in 2002. The University is named after Saint Baba Ghulam Shah Badshah. It mainly focuses on undergraduate Engineering courses, a set of diverse Post Graduate courses, and research in fields such as Management, Environment, Biodiversity, Bio-Technology, Computer Sciences, Information Technology, and Applied Mathematics. Javed Musarrat is new Vice-Chancellor of the University while the Chief Minister of Jammu & Kashmir is the Chancellor. The university is recognized & has an affiliation to AICTE, NAAC & UGC. It has been ranked by NIRF as 300 for its overall performance.

3. Bengaluru DR.B R Ambedkar School of Economics University (BASE):

Bengaluru Dr. B R Ambedkar School of Economics University (BASE) was established in April 2017 & its first undergraduate batch was started in August 2017. The Government of Karnataka has allotted 43.5 Acres of Land in the Jnana Bharathi campus of Bangalore University. The University is mainly established for Higher Education of students in Economical Sciences. The government also released 350 crores for the establishment of the University. Honorable Minister of Higher Education, Government of Karnataka & Honorable Minister of Social Welfare, Government of Karnataka is serving as the Chairman & Vice- Chairman of the University. The university has an affiliation with NAAC & UGC.

4. Central University of Andhra Pradesh:

The Central University of Andhra Pradesh is established in 2019 under the Act of Andhra Pradesh Recognition in 2014& Central Universities Act of 2019 ( Amendment). The University is granted land of 491.3 Acres for its campus which includes both academic & Residential facilities. The University offers programs in Undergraduate & Postgraduate programs which fall into various departments, namely, School of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, School of Interdisciplinary and Applied Sciences, School of Languages, School of Vocational Education and skill development &School of Commerce and Management. CUAP offers BA (Honors & Vocational), MA (Honors) in the above-mentioned schools. It offers courses in Semester based & based on the Choice Based Credit System for the students.

5. Central University of Gujarat:

The Central University of Gujarat was established in Gandhinagar, Gujarat, 2009 under Central Universities Act 2009. This university has Hashmukh Adia & Prof. Ram Shankar Dubey as its current Chairman & Vice Chairman of the University. The university includes 16 Schools, 14 Academic Departments & 2 other Special Centers. The university offers 12 courses in 5 streams & 4 specializations. The university does not have its own campus. The university is ranked 60 for its overall performance in India & 2nd in Universities in India by NIRF. The university offers various undergraduate & PG courses which are divided into streams of Science, Humanities & Social Sciences, Teaching & Education, Business & Management Studies & Arts (visual, Fine & performing).

6. Central University Of Haryana:

Central University of Haryana was established at Janet-Pali Villages, Mahendergarh district of Haryana in 2009 under the Central Universities Act of 2009. The University holds its permanent campus in an area of 488 acres of land from which it operates. The University has been accredited by NAAC & is funded by University Grants Commission (UGC). The University has Prof. Dr. P L Chaturvedi & Prof. Dr. R C Kuhad as its current Chancellor& Vice-Chancellor. There are 11 Schools (30 Departments) in the University under which Graduation, Post Graduate, M.Phil. and Ph.D. courses are offered.The admissions are accepted only through Central University Common Entrance Test commonly known as CUCET. The available schools are School of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, School of Chemical Sciences, School of Computer Science and Informatics, School of Earth, Environment and Space Studies, School of Journalism and Mass Communication, School of Language, Linguistics, Culture and Heritage, School of Law, Governance, Public Policy and Management, School of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, School of Interdisciplinary and Applied Life Sciences, School of Engineering and Technology&School of Education.

7.Central University of Jammu:

The Central University of Jammu has been established in 2009 under the Central Universities Act No. 25 of Act of 2009, while it began its operations only in 2011. The University offers Undergraduate, Post Graduate& Research-oriented programs for the students. The Courses are offered under different Schools like School of Business Studies, School of Basic & Applied Sciences, School of Education, School of Humanities & Social Studies, School of Languages, School Of Life Sciences, School of National Security Studies & School of Knowledge Management, and Information& Media Studies. The Chancellor of the university is GopalaSwami Parthasarathy while Prof. Ashok Aima serves as the current Vice Chancellor for the University.

8. Khalikote University Berhampur (KUBO):

Khalikote University was established in 2015 as the first Cluster university under the Odisha Act 5 1989 which later was converted from Khalikote University to Unitary University on26th February 2020. The University is funded by University Grants Commission (UGC) & is situated in the urban area of Berhampur in a land of 16.5 acres. The University mainly offers Post graduation courses for the students in six interdisciplinary subjects through its six PG Departments and Bioinformatics, Department of Natural Resources Management and Geo-informatics, Department of Library and Information Science, Department of Economics and Management, Department of Travel, Tourism and Hospitality Management and Department of Mass Communication and Media Technology. The University admits students only through the CUCET exam. The Governor of Odisha serves as the Chancellor of the University while Amarendra Narayan Mishra serves as the Vice-Chancellor of the University.

9. Sardar Patel University of Police, Security & Criminal Justice, Jodhpur (SPUP):

The University was established by the Government of Rajasthan through Sardar Patel University of Police, Security & Criminal Justice, Jodhpur Act 2012, named after the First Deputy Prime Minister of India. The university was gifted 84.66 acres of land at Lord Panditji, Nagaur Road, Jodhpur by the Government of Rajasthan. N. Y.K. Reddy serves as the Vice-Chancellor of the University while Bhupendra Singh serves as the Pro-Vice-Chancellor of the university. The chancellor of the university is Shri Kalraj Mishra. The university offers UG Postgraduate & Research Programs in Police Sciences, Social Sciences, Criminology, Criminal Law, Public Safety & National Security.

10. Central University of Kashmir:

The Central University of Kashmir was established in 2009 which is located in Gandharbal district of Jammu& Kashmir. It currently operates from four campuses: Green Campus at Duderhama, Lunar Campus at Nunar, Old Hospital Campus at Ganderbal, and Tulmulla Campus at Tulmulla. The university has its affiliations with the University Grants Commission (UGC) & Association of Common Wealth Universities (ACU) which help in funding & promotion of Higher Education in the country. The university has Syyed Ata Hasnain & Mehraj Ud-Din Mir as its Chancellor & vice- Chancellors. The university offers 3 years Bachelor’s program in Vocational studies (BVSc), 5 years integrated Bachelor’s program in various disciplines like School of Business Studies, School of Education, School of Engineering & Technology, School of Languages, School of Legal Studies, School of Life Sciences, School of Media Studies, School of Physical & Chemical Sciences&School of Social Sciences. The university admits students through CUCET & CUKAT (Central University of Kashmir Admission Test).

11. Central University of Kerala:

The Central University of Kerala is one of the 15 central Universities established under Central Universities Act 2009 by Parliament of India. The university is situated in Kasaragod district while the main campus is situated in Periya 20kms from here. The university started its operations from a Transit campus in Vidyanagar with its Humanities School & other amenities. Prof S V Seshagiri Rao serves as the Chancellor of the university while Prof. Dr. G. Gopa Kumar & prof. Dr. K. Jaya Prasad serves as the Vice-Chancellor & pro-Vice-Chancellor of the university. The university offers both Postgraduate & Ph.D. Programs for the students. The university is offering these courses in various disciplines – School of Global Studies, School of Economics, School of Humanities & Social Sciences, School of Mathematical & Physical Sciences, School of Biological Sciences, School of Law & Education, School of Languages & Literature, School Of Business Studies. The university offers the Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) for the students.

12. Central University of Odisha:

The Central University of Orissa was established under the Central University Act 2009 (sec.3) in Sunabeda town, Koraput District, Odisha.Prof. P V Krishna Bhatta currently serves as the Chancellor while Dr. Ivaturi Ramabrahmam serves as the Vice-Chancellor of the university. The university was changed to the Central University of Odisha under the Central Universities (Amendment) Act of 2019. The university has a campus of 450 acres spreading over villages Chikapur & Chakarliput. The university offers an Integrated Undergraduate – Master’s program (UI), Postgraduate program & Research programs for the students. These programs are offered in various departments of the School of Languages, School of Social Sciences, School of Education & Education Technology, School of Basic Science & Information Science. School of Commerce & Management, School of Biodiversity & Conservation of Natural Resources & School of Applied Sciences.

13. Central University of Punjab:

The Central University of Punjab was established in 2009 under the act of 2009 in Bhatinda, Punjab because of which the university is also called Bhatinda University. The University has Sardara Singh Johal&R K Kohli as its current Chancellor & Vice- Chancellors. The Urban campus of the university is about 35 Acres in the city of Bhatinda whereas the main campus is spread around more than 500 acres in Ghuda village. The university offers mainly research-oriented masters and doctoral degree programs: Ph.D., M.Phil. M.Sc., M.A., Pharm., M.Tech. LL.M., M.Ed, and post-graduate diploma programs in various school of Basic & Applied Sciences, School of Education, School of Engineering & Technology, School of Environment and Earth Sciences, School of Global Relations, School of Health Sciences, School of Languages, Literature and Culture, School of Legal Studies and Governance, School of Social Studies. The Bhatinda University is the youngest university to be accredited with NAAC A+ grade & attain 65 th Rank by NIRF (overall).

14. Central University Rajasthan:

Central University of Rajasthan (CURAJ) was established in 2009 by Parliament of India in Ajmir, Rajasthan. CURAJ has ten schools, twenty academic departments, and one community college. This university usually is in charge of conducting CUCET, entrance exams for admission to Central Universities in India. The University is located on the Jaipur- Ajmir Express Highway on the campus of 518 acres of land which was donated by the Government of Rajasthan. The university initially offered only research-oriented programs in Postgraduate programs, but from 2014 it started the Undergraduate& Doctoral programs. K. Kasturi Rangan serves as Chancellor of the university while Arun K Pujari serves as the Vice-Chancellor. The university has affiliations with UGC & AIU. The university offers programs that fall under various schools like School of Architecture, School of Chemical Sciences & Pharmacy, School of Commerce & Management, School of Engineering & Technology, School of Earth Sciences, School of Humanities & Languages, School of Mathematics, Statistics, Computational Sciences, School of Social Sciences and School of Physical Sciences. CURAJ accepts admissions through CUCET, CCMT & GATE Exams.

15. Central University of South Bihar:

The Central University of Bihar was established under the Central Universities Act 2009, which later changed its name to the Central University of South Bihar with Amendment (2014) in the Act. University was previously operating from the BITS campus which planned to move to a 300 acres campus, Panchanpur, Gaya granted by the Government of India. The University has Prof. H C S Rathore serving as its current Vice-Chancellor, while Prof. Om Prakash Rai serves as its Pro-Vice-Chancellor. Till date, the university has been able to offer four integrated undergraduates (UG) programs, 16 postgraduate (PG) programs, and 11 Integrated MPhil – Ph.D. Programs which fall under various schools – School of Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science, School of Physical and Chemical Sciences, School of Earth, Biological and Environmental Sciences, School of Technology, School of Health Sciences, School of Social Sciences and Policy, School of Human Sciences, School of Languages and Literature, School of Media, Arts & Aesthetics, School of Management, School of Education, School of Vocational Studies School of Law and Governance and School of Agriculture and Development. The university has affiliations with UGC, AICTE, and MHRD, etc.

16. Central University of Tamilnadu :

Central University of Tamilnadu (CUTN) was established under The Act of Parliament (No.25) on a campus of 516.76 acres.  The university has Prof. Padmanabhan & prof. Aditya Prasad das serving as its current Chancellor& Vice-chancellors. The university at present has 27 departments with 62 programs which include integrated graduate, Postgraduate & Doctoral programs. These programs fall under different schools namely- School of Basic & Applied Sciences, School of Behavioral Sciences, School of Commerce & Business Management, School of Communication, School of Earth Sciences, School of Education & Training, School of Law, School of Life Sciences, School of Maths & Computer Sciences, School of Performing & Fine Arts, School of Social Sciences& Humanities and School of Technology. It offers admission through the CUCET exam for the students.

17. Central University of Jharkhand:

The Central University of Jharkhand was established in Ranchi, Jharkhand, under the Parliament Act of 2009 (No.25). CUJ offers Master’s Program in more than 20 disciplines, teacher training program (B.Ed.) and Ph.Ds. programs. Admission to the M.Sc./M.Tech/M.B.A./M.A./ B.Ed. and Ph.D. programs are based on the Central Universities Common Entrance Test (CUCET). Admission to the Certificate & Diploma courses are based on Internal Entrance Test. Justice V N Khare is currently serving as the university Chancellor while Prof. Nand Kumar Yadav serves as the Vice-Chancellor of the University. The University has an affiliation to UGC from which it gets its funds. The programs that university offers fall under various schools – School of Management Sciences, School of Mass Communication & Media Technologies, School of Languages, School of Natural Sciences, School of Engineering & Technology, School for the Study of Culture, School of Natural Resource Management, School of Social Sciences & Humanities, Centre for Endangered Languages.

18.Central University of Karnataka:

The Central University of Karnataka was established Kadaganchi, Gulbarga in 2009, under Central Universities Act 2009. The Government of Karnataka has donated 650 acres of land for the construction of University. The university has an affiliation with the University Grants Commission (UGC) & Association of Indian Universities. The main objective of the University is integrating the components of Teaching, Research, Innovation, Training, and Skill Development (TRI-TSD) with an aspiration to excel in a dual degree, postgraduate and doctoral programs. The University offers the programs in following five dominant areas: Arts, Humanities, Management, Sciences, and Engineering. Currently the University is running 16 Departments spread in 8 Schools and 1 Centre, and offering 9 Dual degree programs, 15 Master degree programs, 16 Research (PhD) programs. Prof. H M Maheswaraiah & Prof. G R Naik are serving as Vice-Chancellor & Pro-Vice-Chancellor of the university.  The University has accreditation from NAAC.

2.Accreditations

Central Universities Common Entrance Test is a mandatory entrance examination for students who wish to study undergraduate, postgraduate, M.Phil, and Ph.D. courses in 14 Central Universities established by Central Universities Act, 2009, in India. The CUCET is currently conducted by the Central University of Rajasthan. From 2020, the test would be administered by the National Testing Agency (NTA). CUCET was first conducted to admission for seven central universities for 1,500 seats in 41 undergraduate, postgraduate and integrated courses from 2010.

3.Salient features

  • CUCET is conducted once – a year.
  • All questions are Multiple Choice Based Questions (MCQs)
  • It is a paper-based Test
  • Part A: Language, general awareness, mathematical aptitude, and analytical skills – consisting of 25 MCQs.
  • Part B: Domain Knowledge – consisting of 75 MCQs. This part may consist of three/four/five sections. Each section will have 25 questions. A candidate is required to answer a set of three sections (75 questions).
  • For Admission to some Integrated Programme/MBA/B.Voc./LLB/MCA or any other general Programme, only one paper consisting of 100 MCQs covering English language, reasoning, data interpretations/numerical ability, general awareness, and analytical skills will be held.
  • CUCET for UI/PG program is conducted in 147 exam centers & 47 centers for Research Programs.
  • Application has to be filled online.
  • Application Fee can be paid through net banking/ Credit Card/ Debit Card / UPI
  • Applicants should be ready with his/her good quality and latest digital photograph (20 KB – 50 KB) andsignature (10 KB – 50 KB) while feeling online form, more information regarding uploading photographand signature are available on the CUCET website under guidelines to upload photograph and signature.
