Satya Nadella- Journey from Manipal University to Microsoft

Satya Nadella, an Indian born – American business executive is the first Indian CEO of Microsoft in whose reign Microsoft has reached to soaring heights. He took a long journey of serious efforts that landed him in the position.

Nadella did his graduation in Electrical Engineering from Manipal Institute of Technology, Karnataka in 1988. He then moved to U.S.in 1990 to study M.S. in Computer Science at University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee. After that, he joined in Sun MicroSystems. He received an MBA degree in 1996 from the University Of Chicago Booth School Of Business.

Nadella joined Microsoft in 1992 when Bill Gates was serving as the CEO. In 2000 he became the Vice President of Microsoft B Central and in 2001 he was promoted to the position of Corporate Vice President of Microsoft Business Solutions which included group of exclusive cloud computing products called Dynamics. In 2007 Nadella became Senior Vice President of Microsoft Online Services. In 2011 he became the President of Server & Tools division where he proved himself by increasing its revenue from $ 16.6 billion to $20.3 billion. Nadella was officially announced as the third & new CEO of Microsoft on 4th Feb 2014. Since Nadella became CEO, Microsoft stock had tripled by September 2018, with an annual growth of 27%.

Under Nadella, Microsoft revised its mission statement to “empower every person and every organization on the planet to achieve more”. He has transformed Microsoft’s corporate culture into one that emphasizes continual learning and growth.

Microsoft acquired a few companies during Nadella’s reign. Noted among them were Mojang, Xamarin, LinkedIn & GitHub.

In 2015, he was awarded the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman (Overseas Indian Honour/Award) for business management by the Government of India. In 2019, Nadella was named Financial Times Person of the Year.

Nadella has also authored a book titled “Hit Refresh” that tells the story of Microsoft’s quest to rediscover its soul and imagine a better future for everyone.
