BITS is the leading educational institution & established as an institution deemed to be a University estd. vide Sec.3 of the UGC Act, 1956 under notification # F.12-23/63.U-2 of Jun 18,1964 offering many Engineering, Medical, Technology, Science, Humanities in Undergraduate, post graduate, Diploma disciplines. BITS has its establishment history dated back in 1901 when Seth Shiv Niranjanji Birla started “Patashala†for his grandsons. This Patashala later developed into high School & later into Intermediate College in the period of 1925-1929. In the period between 1943- 1947 Birla Education Trust was founded which helped in converting the Intermediate college into Degree College which later started Post Graduate programmes. Higher Education courses in Pharmacy, Arts & Commerce were also started in between 1947-1952. Dr. G.D. Birla himself as chairman in 1964 started Birla Institute of Technology & Science as an Institute. This Institute later developed into University with monetary help from Ford Foundation Grant & the guidance of Dr. G.D.Birla in 1964 in association with Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), USA.
BITSÂ has two Special programmes for encouraging better work force in the organizations. They are:
1.PS (Practice School) – An innovation in Education seeking to link industry experience with University Instruction. This was introduced in all the disciplines in Pilani Campus in 1973.
PS -1: This is 8 weeks summer offered to 2 years experienced employees. PS-I is primarily exposure-oriented program which is graded for five units as it is an integral part of the curriculum.
PS-2: Practice School-II, of five and a half months duration, carrying twenty units credit, is operated round the year, from July to December and January to June. This facilitates a continuous stream of well-prepared students to work on developmental projects in industry. Since the students participate in and contribute to live projects, they are supported by a stipend and/or other facilities such as accommodation, travel reimbursement, etc.
2.WILP (Work Integrated Learning Programme): This programme offers opportunity to continue studies without disturbing one’s career. These Programmes are offered differently for organizations & Individuals. These enhance the performance of employees & make smarter workforce for organizations.
BITS WILP has around 39 years of experience in educating working professionals in 30+ Programmes with 1000+ faculty members for 90+ corporate clients. These programmes have been enrolled by 20,000+ at present & graduated by 70,000+ working professionals.

The Students’ Union is the elected administrative body for the students. Elections are supervised by a student commission. The student-run Corroboration and Review Committee handles financial transactions for the Students’ Union. The Governing Council of the Society for Student Mess Services manages dining matters.
1.BITSMUN
BITS Model United Nations Conference (BITSMUN) is one of the largest MUN conferences in the country. Organized annually in Pilani, BITSMUN attracts experienced and first time MUN participants from colleges and schools all over the globe. The conference was founded in 2007 as a grassroots project aimed at introducing Model UN to students who otherwise would not have the opportunity to participate in this experience. It has in the current past been expanding to an increasing number of colleges and schools from all parts of the world to encourage greater participation in an activity that brings together knowledge in international relations and interpersonal skills.
2.BOSM
BOSM (BITS-Pilani Open Sports Meet) is the annual sports competition at the Pilani campus. BITS-Pilani invites colleges throughout India to participate in events including carrom board, hockey, cricket, basketball, football, volleyball, track and field, badminton, tennis, table tennis, squash and weightlifting. Since its 2010 Silver Jubilee (25th) anniversary, BOSM has invited a team from Moratuwa University in Sri Lanka.
3.APOGEE
APOGEE (A Professions Oriented Gathering over Educational Experiences) is an international annual technical festival at the Pilani campus. Since its inception in 1983, APOGEE has hosted students and researchers from across the country. The guest lecture series of the fest, Think Again Conclave has received eminent speakers in the past which include A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, Richard Stallman, Jimmy Wales, Kailash Satyarthi, Walter Lewin and A. S. Kiran Kumar. Other events include the Paper Presentation Event, which is one of the oldest research paper presentation platforms in the country, and Project Presentation, which exhibits over 550 projects in various fields of science and engineering.
4.Spark
BITS Spark programme was launched in 2012. The programme promotes entrepreneurship courses and workshops, offers mentorship, and provides angel funds.

BITS offers graduate courses through BITSAT exam & Post graduate courses through BITS HD/ GATE/ GPAT exams. Integrated First Degree courses are offered in 3 disciplines- BE, B Pharm &MSC where as Higher Degree Programmes are offered in 3 disciplines- ME, M Pharm, MBA & PHD programmes are offered as Full time & Part time courses. A total of 39 courses are offered by BITS for UG & PG Programmes.
The candidate should have obtained a minimum of aggregate 75% marks in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics subjects (if he/she has taken Mathematics in BITSAT), with at least 60% marks in each of the subjects
